Can’t wait to see this AVC thing in action. Finally, an internal 10 bit recording format.

September 13, 2007 at 4:29 amI’m afraid,(but happy!), the RED camera will kill anything trying to compete in this price range, and will have far better quality. And the workflow is already ready to go in FCP.

September 13, 2007 at 6:35 amI agree to s point with you. The next camera I will buy in the next 3 years will be the Red. But the one thing about the Red is that it has no Auto Focus. I know with that camera you don’t need one because it is designed like a film camera, but for everyday shooting and low budget commercial I am happy with the HVX-200. If the Red is successful, other companies will have to come up with a similar product I would think.

September 13, 2007 at 10:39 amThat’s debatable. I’m as excited as the next shooter about Red, have two on order. That said, it’s not going to magically kill off every other camera overnight. They are currently hard to come by- long wait list to get one and only 50 are out in the world. The workflow is still being worked out as we speak. Lenses are not cheap, etc.
It will take a long time for mainstream production houses to move away from brands they trust and are heavily invested in. What’s without a doubt is that the bar has been raised quite high and we’re all likely to benefit from the competition.

September 13, 2007 at 2:12 pmOh yeah, so if someone sent you 4K Redcode files you’d be able to edit and monitor them?
Challenge.
Couldn’t do it with the AVC-Intra codec either.
I don’t want to get in a Red discussion here, there’s a forum for that.
In our little world, we need to record audio on board, and the HPX3000 looks like it does that times 4, and also provides a 10 bit compression, which is nice for post guys like me. It also provides the proven DVCPro HD with a true 1080 imager.
RED looks cool, but it’s not for everyone, and definitely not a run and gun camera, which we do from time to time.

I couldn’t agree more, Noah. Revolutionary products affect the market and can even help define the market, but ultimately sheer numbers dominate and thereby make up the backbone of the market.
Red will no doubt accomplish the first two, but I highly doubt that they will accomplish number three anytime in the foreseeable future.
A good example is Media 100. They once completely rearranged the market and replaced systems that were selling for a quarter-million or so — systems that largely came with an Avid nameplate at the time. Media 100 affected and helped revolutionize the market but ultimately, the sheer numbers of players like Apple, Avid and Adobe ate up M100’s onetime edge.
Red will no doubt change the game but the giants never go away and just adapt to the changing market, offering their own competitors and marketing them with a serious vengeance.
That’s been my observation as to how it almost always plays out in the market.
But hey, everyone loves a revolutionary — well, almost everyone. ;o)
