I am currently trying to create an object that moves around a square image, something that has inconsistent velocity as well as a tail almost like a comet. I have started with different blurs and glow and the beam effect but nothing is really making it come to life, are there any suggestions on how to create this object?

No idea at all what you are trying to accomplish. Trails and tails can be created with any number of particle or time effects.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Try Trapcode Particular.

You can also try using the particle effect called Effect > Simulation > CC Particle systems 2. If you set the velocity to 0 and move the emitter, it will create a trail based on the motion.
