objects repeating along a path
Hey guys,
Looking for a little help with an effect I need to do which involves a simple object (often a square or star) that needs to repeat along a 3D path… The effect looks similar to Stroke animating along a 3D path, when the Stroke is set with 100% spacing so it appears that it is a series of repeating circles.
Trying to find the best way to create this effect that will allow me to swap out the objects so that certain paths are stars, others squares or triangles as requested rather than rebuild for every instance. Seems like an easy request but I am just not finding a very efficient way.
Plugin suggestions welcome if thats what it takes, but, for instance, I haven’t found the look I am going for with Particular, so if that’s how it needs to be done then please explain what the settings need to be.

my first guess would be playing with Shape Layers. In the AE CS3 promo on the Adobe website you can clearly see that they do something similar, but I haven’t fond it anywhere and I was unable to achieve the same effect. I’m planning an extensive tutorial on Shape Layers, because sometimes they can be quite confusing. The only thing that stops me from doing it is the problem you’ve mentioned.
For now I can suggest using Particular with a 3D Light animating along a 3D path and then offsetting the layer if needed. I belive there is an option to emit particles from this path, so If you set the velocity to 0 the particles should stay on the path. I’m sorry I can’t jump into AE and give you a step-by-step solution, but I hope that I’ve pointed you to the right direction.
