NY Times Columnist Says Nothing Is Missing in FCPX
Apparently, we are all mistaken. According to The New York TImes tech columnist.. “If there’s anything important missing from the new Final Cut, I can’t find it.”

All joking aside, let’s not lose sight of the fact that editing is an art not just a matter of pushing the right buttons. We are creative professionals. Many of us used to edit on basic tape to tape machines or with actual film. While the tech tools we use are important, let’s not lose sight of the artistry required in our work. No doubt we need certain features to do the job properly. No doubt that many of those features are missing from FCPX. But at the end of the day, it’s still about storytelling and creativity. And Apple can’t remove that feature from you.

That’s true, but Apple also can’t remove my story from FCP X and put it to tape at hour one. Hmmm. Nothing’s missing? Really?

No doubt Chris. They certainly put a lot of us in a difficult spot. But they will either fix the problems or we will all find something else that better meets our needs. Fortunately, Apple has some pretty good competition these days. I just know that creatives whose skills are more than knowing when to push jkl will eventually come out on top regardless of who makes the editing software.

there is really great software by blackmagic called Media Express that can help you with tape
workflow…only thing I am really missing is xml or some kind of workflow for davinci now…

This is true. But for many of us editing and the associated arts are a business as well. And while FCP is a just tool, it is a tool I expect support for. Just like the vehicle I use to get to shoots. It too is a tool. And I expect to be able to get parts and service for that vehicle from the dealer. Removing FCP7 so that those running lower versions can no longer upgrade is removing a level of support I and others expect, and paid for.

there are many users who have paid for multiple licenses and lots of shiny Apple hardware, and who have hundreds of project files that are continuously opened, as sequences are modified and updated and distributed.Those files cannot be opened, imported or used by FCPX. So they must continue to work in FCP7, but without ANY assurance that this discontinued software will work in Lion, in subsequent updates of Lion or in “Lion King” or “Cheetah” or whatever comes next. Suddenly your entire decade’s archive of work is in jeopardy.
Sure there are lots of other tools out there, but your “creativity” needs to be going into your storytelling, not devising creative work-arounds for porting all your Final Cut sequences over to Avid and Premiere as a hedge against FCP7 becoming eventually “Failure to Cut Pro”

He wouldn’t notice anything missing because they are not features a newspaper/webzine publisher would ever need! If he were a bradcaster, well he would notice this tape thing you speak of….

Pogue is either clueless or he’s over-simplified what he’s talking about. He’s dazzled by the cool parts of x, but he’s totally ignoring the issues we’re arguing about, like Apple, passing them off as irrelevant.

I emailed him about this. He says he “revsing” the article to reflect “the pro’s” concerns.

Hey Apple.
The NYT listened to members of the pro community and is revising their work to better reflect the actual situation. The power of the Cow. They listened to the experts and fixed the problem. Perhaps you could learn something from their example.
We are not complaining for the sake of complaining. I am sure my colleagues would rather be celebrating the arrival of a stable and efficient FCP product they can actually use. You blew it. We can’t turn back the bad launch at this point. It’s out there. But you can at least communicate your intentions for making things right. This isn’t another iPhone launch. It’s not a generic consumer product. Many, many people make their living using your product. Our business depends on it. Do the right thing and end the Apple code of silence BS.
