NVidia Video Graphic Card Problems…or?
I’m at the end of my rope — just bought a new desktop to speed up video rendering (over my previous laptop) and despite having tried everything there are still ‘glitches’ in the render. Before this my last computer was a Lenovo laptop with 1/4 the RAM and an older processor and the renders were fine even if (1) my other programs were running in the background (2) I was connected to the internet and (2) I was using the computer on other tasks while rendering.
Now on my new desktop …I’ve
-turned off the hardware accelerator
-made sure I’m disconnected from internet and Antivirus while rendering
-Not using the computer at all while it renders
– shutting all other programs down while rendering.But still get those render glitches. And what’s odd — a few of them seem to hover around the same area but they’re never in exactly the same place..strange.
The source video appears to be fine — and to confirm that when I render a loop region around those areas there’s no problem.
So here’s my intuitive take — my new Dell XPS 8700 came with an NVidia GEForce GT 720 — but when I read up on it I saw this was Nvidia’s entry into the ‘basic’ graphic card field.I wouldn’t have thought anything of it…but now I’m wondering whether the card isn’t capable of handling rendering? Or whether this card is defective? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else to try? This is driving me crazy…and without any other info I’m about to decide it’s the card and so about to return the machine. Should I get an AMD Card now?

Then it has nothing to do with your graphics card once you turn the GPU off.
What codec does your source video use? Some codecs don’t play nice with Vegas Pro.

I have the same suspicions as Mr. Rofrano. The culprit is probably in the source files.

Thanks for your quick reply — I’m capturing a mini-dv in an SD AVI format. And it’s from the same camera that this org has been using for about three years. I’ve been using Vegas Pro 12 on my Lenovo laptop to do this until now — capturing/editing/rendering — without an issue re the codec or the capture or render. Now I am still capturing the mini-dv on the laptop (yes, yes..I’ll let go of firewire eventually…) and then transferring that file to the new desktop to edit and render — once again in Vegas Pro 12…and that’s when the problem shows up.
I’m fairly certain that if I transfer all the elements back to the laptop and do the render in Vegas pro 12 on the laptop it will be fine…since it’s always been fine in the past. (I do know the playback from the file rendered on the new computer has the same issues playing back on the laptop that it does on the desktop — so the problems are created in the render on the desktop) .

First of all, the process of transfer from video camera via firewire is a coping process, not capture.
Importing that file into Vegas involves a decoder. You might have something in your new desktop that conflicts with that. Did you had installed on laptop something else?

Are you using Vegas Pro 12.0 on your desktop as well? You didn’t say. DV AVI files should edit quite easily so I agree with Sorin that perhaps some software on your desktop is conflicting. I once had a problem with Nero where it caused Boris RED not to be able to process DV AVI files. I uninstalled Nero and all was well again. I never used Nero on any of my computers again. Check the list of installed software between your laptop and your desktop. I’m sure Dell added lots of “bloatware” that could be causing problems.

Reporting back..
I went back and pared down services/startup etc. in case of conflicts (note that this is a new computer and so I don’t have much on it) and re-rendered and still had a problem — tried render in safe mode (is that even recommended? Figured it was worth a try..) — but still had a problem.
So after some more tracking down, it turns there were some issues with the NVidia 720 GeForce Video Graphic Card after all. Nvidia has just released a 300 MB update which took care of some but not all of my glitches. Then I came across a post on this forum where the user found that Windows Media Player was getting ‘overloaded’ in playback — that would have been the last place I’d look since there had never been an issue with WMP on any of my previous machines or on my laptop. But it seems the combination of Vegas/the new computer/graphics card and WMP was not a happy one all the way around. I played the video newly re-rendered using the updated NVidia and using another media player and the rest of the glitches were gone…whew!
Just goes to show…best to check all variables when a problem comes up — even the ones you are absolutely sure are no problem. Thanks for your help on all of this…back to work!

Wow, I would have never suspected video drivers but you never know how much a bug in a video driver can affect your system. Glad to see you’ve found it. Thanks for getting back to us. I’m sure this will help someone out with that video card.

Actually that’s one of the reason’s I moved to the Mac. The graphics card in my Mac Pro is the same graphics card that the developers who are writing the software are using so I know it’s getting tested on the same/similar hardware. Sometimes not having too many choices has it’s benefits too. 😉
