    Hi All,

Although gpu acceleration is running, I’m not super happy with playback of my multiple HD feed project (even with proxies made).

My current card is a Nvidia quadro fx 3700 with only 512 megs of memory.

I’m wondering If upgrading to a card with at least a gig of memory will make a noticeable difference in my preview / editing, and if someone could recommend a good card (older / cheaper) I’d be gratefull.

The Quadro FX xxxx line is quite old. It was replaced by the Quadro xxxx which has now been replaced Quadro Kxxxx so your card is two generations behind. Having said that, GPU acceleration in Vegas Pro is not providing the performance boost that most people are expecting so I’d hate to tell you to upgrade to a newer card and still not have good performance. The Sony GPU acceleration page says that the Quadro FX line is supported and you only need 512MB of memory so your card is within specs although it’s at the bottom end.

If you are going to upgrade your card I would buy it from a place that you can return it to if you are not happy with the performance.

    John,

Thanks for the consistent and good advice. My video card is indeed old, but I wasn’t aware of how many generations it was back. From your response, and specifically relating to the 512 being minimum spec from Sony, I’ll just stick to my simple system for now until I can upgrade to a whole new machine (my workstation is quite old too).

    Much thanks again,

[Thoreau Bakker] “I’ll just stick to my simple system for now until I can upgrade to a whole new machine (my workstation is quite old too).”

That’s probably a good idea. What most people don’t understand (but you obviously do) is that computer components need to be properly matched. Buying a fancy new graphics card for an old system isn’t going to give you much benefit. For example, I bought my Quadro 4000 back when I had a Core 2 Quad system and when the box arrived, it said on the outside: “minimum requirements Core i7”! I installed it anyway but I didn’t see much of an improvement until I upgraded my computer to a Core i7 so it’s best to upgrade all parts at the same time to make sure that they match and compliment each other in performance.
