  • NTSC footage to be edited in PAL in Ireland

Posted by Beau Brotherton on January 14, 2008 at 9:12 pm

    Hello to all,

I work for a company that produces Travel Videos. We shoot DVCProHD 1080i/24p with the HDX900 (or whatever format that camera tries to do 1080 at 23.98fps).

We have some b-roll that this production company wants to use for their spot on these islands in the Caribbean. So, we sent them a outputted DVCProHD 1080i (1080i because we had to use a Panasonic 1200A deck, to my knowledge it only does 1080i60).

So, my question is, this company is in Ireland and cuts on FCP (not sure what version) in PAL. The question is can this company edit DVCProHD 1080 NTSC footage in PAL?

Thanks for all of your help and I look forward to responses.

As long as they have the right deck it play it, they can edit the footage. If you footage was shot originally 23.98, then you made a tape master to 1080/60i, the tape master will have a standard 2:3 pulldown.

If the company in Ireland digitizes the tape at 60i then they could use cinema tools to remove the 2:3 pulldown to restore the 24P file. The next step would be to use cinema tools to conform the 24P footage to 25P. This will speed the footage up by 4%, but it’s a generally accepted practice and is really nice because it keeps the quality high by not modifying the image, but just changing the number of frames it plays per second.

    Russ,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I am not going to be the one to do this, but I am the one that is told that I have to know how to do this.

So, you mentioned that Cinema Tools can do these conversions? I have also read just now about a program called, Graeme Nattress’s Standards Converter, are you familiar with this? And also can Compressor do this conversion? I read that Compressor does take a long time.

Thanks again and let me know if you have any other thoughts, please.

Well, that’s obviously something you should be asking your vendor, not us. Unless someone from that company is a member of this forum, nobody here can tell you what they can or can not do.

But the bigger question is, if you need it in PAL, why not shoot it in PAL? DVCPro HD 1080 is recorded on tape as either 60i or 50i. 24P is actually recorded as 30i with pulldown. It can be converted to 50i or 25PsF after it’s been cut.

If you need it to be PAL, you should have shot 25P (really 25PsF) or 50i.

Compressor using the frame-controls tab will give you great results, but it is heavily
processor dependent therefore very slow, can you get time on a new Mac Pro tower?

    Cheers

If it’s originally 24p, Cinema Tools will help to just re-conform it (like flipping a speed switch on a projector in the old times). Fast and perfect quality, but you’ll need to speed up the sound too.

Graeme’s filters do a great job for interlaced material and are much faster than compressor.

    Uli
