ntoskrnl.exe
Posted by Cody Swanson on July 20, 2013 at 2:23 amRecently upgraded from an Ati HD 6850 to an Nvidia GTX 650 ti Boost. Running windows.
While editing a project for a client, Black Magic ProRes mixed with after effects nested sequences, the computer has started either restarting or giving a BSOD citing ntoskrnl.exe as the culprit driver.
It only seems to happen in Premiere. Does anyone have any idea what’s going on, or have you seen anything like this?
Thanks!

July 20, 2013 at 2:06 pmIt looks as if you may either have a malware problem or that there’s a hardware problem causing your crashes. Here’s a good discussion on it:

July 20, 2013 at 2:16 pmThanks. I’m going to run a scan soon to give it a look.
I’m also going to attempt to render out all the AE clips and replace the PPro nested clips with the rendered versions and see if that helps with final renders in Premiere. It’s really confusing because I’ve never had this problem with either program before, or the computer.
I’m thinking it has something to do with the Nvidia card but there shouldn’t be anything weird with that, either. I’m this close to just re-formatting the main drive to see if that fixes whatever has gotten messed up but since I have this project deadline I’ve got to weight the time to re-install everything, etc. I’ll let you know if AVG finds anything worthwhile.

July 20, 2013 at 3:24 pmOne thing you might try, if you’re comfortable with it, is shutting down your computer, pulling the power cord, then reseating your video card. It’s a stretch, but you never know. Do you back up your registry? If so, you might want to just try a restore – if you don’t do it, it’s a great way to save the bacon when problems such as this come up.

July 20, 2013 at 5:31 pmWell, AVG didn’t find anything of issue. It said that MacDrive had a broken digital signature, but otherwise all seemed okay. I’m still quite confused. Replaced most major AE sequences with AVI or MOV and it still locks up or crashed. I’ve taken the card out and reseated a few times recently from switching the cards, so I don’t think that’s an issue. And I don’t have the registry backed up, sadly.
Not really sure what to do at this point. I had a PProheadless.exe error before the last freeze so I’ve looked into that and changed a few settings to see if that fixes things. Who knows…
Thanks for your suggestions, Joe. It sucks to have what feels like a mysteriously crippled machine that shouldn’t be.

July 20, 2013 at 8:31 pmWell… Oddly enough, I managed to get the project to export to AVI, instead of h.264 (this is for a client rough edit review). When I then tried to transcode the .avi to .mp4 (h.264) it froze, twice. So then I transcoded it to quicktime .mov h.264 and THAT worked. I have no clue why that would be happening but, well, for the time being at least I’ve got something to render…
Anyway, thanks for you help. The saga continues I guess but I feel a clean os install is around the corner.
