Now do you import and work with mp4 to retain quality
Posted by Andrew Taylor on January 9, 2019 at 7:12 pmHi
I imported an mp4 into vegas then edited it & rendered ito into movie but the quality is bad
What is the best way to import and edit an mp4 and retain the best quality possible?
I am using sony 9

January 9, 2019 at 10:26 pmFirst thing you can check the bitrate of the media. on windows I just right click on the file and go to properties then details. Before you render highlight the whole project with the select tool (no audio just video/images or it would work). When it’s all highlighted yellow go to edit/switches then disable resample. Now when you go to render look for something like hd internet 1080 or something like that, basically look at the options under the mp4 section. Pick one then go to customize settings. You don’t want the frame size to be bigger than the source media, and you typically want the frame rate to match as well. Vegas will usually set that up automatically when you put the first video clip in. Now choose or put in a constant bitrate or a variable bitrate that evens out to be close to the actual bitrate of the media, select 2 pass encoding, then click on project and go to video rendering quality and select best. This should probably increase the quality of the render, I’m a pretty big dunce when it comes to video quality/sound quality kind of stuff and this basically the extent of my knowledge in this area.

January 10, 2019 at 3:28 pmAndrew, can you provide some addition details about your project? Using Mediainfo (in text mode) post a screenshot of your source media specs, a screenshot of your Project settings, and a screenshot of the render template settings you used. This will further help us to make suggestion for improved quality.
Best Regards……George

June 14, 2019 at 10:53 pmHi Andrew,
If it were me, I would use something like Handbrake to convert the source media from variable frame rate to constant frame rate. Bring that into a new project, match media in the project settings. Select ‘Disable resample’ on each video event, then match the render settings with your project settings and see if that makes an improvement.
Best Regards……George

June 15, 2019 at 10:35 amsorry, i fixed up the fps to constant and that worked for the video.
But I find the sound track is out of syc,I had thought of adding a clapper board and manually moving the sound track in the editor.
Do you recommend that? -
George Dean
June 15, 2019 at 10:58 pmYou can use a clapper board, clap your hands, use Plural Eyes, or manual sync it using the audio wave forms.
May I ask, what are you using to record your source media?
Best Regards……George
