I am right now in process of buying hardware to run my freshly bought avid. So far I was always working on equipment that belonged to someone else. Now it’s high time to become truly independent. Problem is – I can not get computers that are written in avid recommended list. On dell webpage I can get T3500 and T5500 with different – now higher processors and they do not sell systems with items listed on recommended list anymore. Is it very bad to get computer that is not from that list? Do you encounter serious incompatibility issues?

Here is what I have found for my not so big pocket

    Precision T5500
    Windows 7 Professional (32 BIT/64 BIT)
Two Intel Xeon E5620(2.4GHz,5.86GT/s,12MB,4C)-Memory runs at 1066MHz
    12 GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory (6 RDIMMs)
    Dual 1 GB nVIDIA Quadro 600,Quad Monitor-1 DP, 1 DVI(1 DP-DVI, 1 DVI-VGA adapter)

Do you think it will do or those specs are to low and can cause some problems in future?

    Another option is following

    Precision T3500

    Windows 7 Professional (32 BIT/64 BIT)
    One Intel® Xeon® W3565 (Quad Core, 3.20 GHz, 8MB Cache, 4.80 GT/s Intel® QPI)
    6GB (3x2GB) 1333MHz ECC UDIMM
    1 GB NVIDIA Quadro 2000 – 2 DP, 1 DVI(1 DP-DVI, 1 DVI-VGA adapter)

Any advises would be highly appreciated.

we have two systems that we’ve built from scratch. I don’t know if we’ve really saved much, and you need to be really careful with every little detail, but they work great once they’re up and running. the latest one is a i7 with 12gb of ram and a quadro 1800 running MC 5.0 We’re going to go to 5.5 any day now. We have an older machine running MC 3.? on dual xeons that was also “home made” and it’s worked without a hiccup for years. Talk to a system builder you trust and see if you can do better going this route.
