February 10, 2013 at 2:47 amWhy did you buy that Codec pack? Windows has one that is referenced in the Vegas help files: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829
And it’s free.
Generally Codec Packs give me the jeebies. Most often they replace the good codecs that Vegas installs with inferior codecs optimized for gaming.
Were there any video codecs in that codec pack?

February 10, 2013 at 2:51 amThe codec pack is strictly for thumbnails… I can see .pdfs, .psds, .eps and .mpo file thumbnails. In any case, I uninstalled and am having the SAME issue. Browsing, then permanent “not responding”, I’ve got almost 300 STILL images in the media bin…

February 10, 2013 at 3:13 amI don’t recall, but did I suggest that you use Resource Monitor (start/run/resmon) to analyze the wait chain?

February 16, 2013 at 7:17 pmStephen,
Made some progress, but…
I was able to complete the edit of a wedding project after I installed Win 7 on my new computer, updated all drivers, stopped using Excalibur (which seemed to be causing some problems on this project, at least. I am hoping to be able to use Excalibur on future projects.) Also uninstalled anti-virus program.
Now, I can’t get the project to render. It starts off fine, then stops working, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours. Very frustrating. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

February 16, 2013 at 9:56 pm*how* does it stop working? Do you get an error message? does it just stop at xx%? Does your PC turn into a Mac?
Try removing all unused media from your Project Media.

February 19, 2013 at 2:23 pmSteve,
I was able to produce a good DVD!! As far as I can tell the major cause of the troubles I have had is the GPU acceleration. When that is turned off, things go better by far. I am able to use Excalibur, for which I am happy. I hope Sony can get the GPU deal bug free. I can tell it makes a difference without it. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. Jim

February 19, 2013 at 3:45 pmThe problem is probably out of Sony’s control. If the GPU driver firmware doesn’t like something on your PC, it either quits or returns an error to the calling program. And Sony gets the blame.
This is why I recommended to Sony a year ago that the GPU support should default off.
I seriously doubt there’s a “bug” in Vegas because the satisfied users outnumber those with problems by a long shot. If there were a bug, then any similarly equipped user would be able to reproduce the problem.

February 19, 2013 at 6:29 pmI can remember not so long ago when I considered Vegas Pro rock solid, nearly impossible to crash, and fun to use. I cannot say that about VP 12. Admittedly, I am still gunshy from this recent experience, but VP 12 still seems fragile, dainty, and vulnerable. I hope my experience changes with other projects, but I will be happy to kiss this current one goodbye. Again, thanks for your help. Jim

February 19, 2013 at 8:30 pmYes, we used to be able to say that Vegas never crashed.
Vegas has always been rock-solid. It wasn’t until Version 10 that the program started relying on third party software or drivers. Before V10, Vegas controlled everything. As of V10, Vegas started encoding AVCHD by sending commands to the GPU over OFX. Also as new formats were becoming popular, Sony utilized third party codecs more.
If it’s any consolation, just browse the other editing forums. They all crash.
