I sure hope it is not, because I really like Excalibur and have been using it for years. Do you know if it is compatible with Win 8? Again, I sure hope so. Best, Jim

I see no reason why it would not work fine on Win8.

    Stephen,

I uninstalled Excalibur, then uninstalled and reinstalled Vegas Pro 12. I am still getting many instances of “not responding,” even on the new computer, and even on a new project that is relatively simple. This is so frustrating, especially because I really like the features available in VP 12. I am tempted to go back to 10. Jim

    A few things to consider:
(I think you said that this is a new computer off the shelf).

Above all, I think that GPU support should be turned off by Sony as the default. Get the program working before you turn on GOU support and introduce an additional layer of potential problems.

Can you replicate the steps that cause the error to present? For example, run Vegas 12, drag a media file to the timeline, save the test project, close Vegas, open the test project. Build on the project until you identify the step that causes the problem.

Do you have any network drives or external storage drives?
    Are Windows updates current?
Do you have the latest Video drivers? If this is a new PC, then the answer right out of the box is no.
Have you tried turning off your antivirus program?
Are you running Vegas as an administrator?

Any of these can stop some process that Vegas is trying to run to stop. Especially if you are running a preinstalled virus program, which are usually overprotective crap. (I use Microsoft Security Essentials).

Also, have you removed the crapware (look for the program: decrapify)? Some of these install in the background and could be interfering with other processes.

I build almost all of my desktop PC’s, and even on the laptops, then first thing I do is replace the Hard-Disk drive (I save the original as a backup) with a larger blank disk and buy Windows 7 update. (Look for the family pack where you can get three licenses for about $129). Here’s an unpublished tip – you can do a new install from an Win 7 upgrade DVD. Just install it without entering the license key (it becomes a trial install), then run the install again, but this time enter the license key. Update sees the first installation as a valid Windows installation and proceeds to update it. If I need to return the laptop for warranty repairs, I just put the original hard drive back in.

    Stephen,

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m leaving town for a few days and will be back next week. Hopefully then I will have more time to look into the things you have mentioned.

FYI, I am using Win 8 now. I am not sure if that has bearing on the things you have mentioned.

I have been using external drives. They have worked well for me in the past, but I am really tempted to get another HD for my computer. It came with a 2 TB HD. However, it is my understanding that it is not a good idea to use the same HD for both the Win system and for the captured files etc associated with Vegas Pro 12. I am assuming there would be no advantage to partitioning the 2 TB drive into partitions and then using one of the partitions for captured files etc for Vegas. Is that assumption correct?

Thanks again for your ideas. I REALLY do want to make Vegas 12 work. But this has been so frustrating dealing with the near constant “not responding.” I’m glad one of us is approaching this rationally!! Jim

    Stephen,

My computer savy son-in-law wants to add an SSD drive for my computer system, but would like your thoughts on it. I sent him your last message, so he will be checking everything you mentioned. Thanks, Jim

Installing an SSD will have an effect on boot time, and a slight improvement of program loading performance, but not much else.

However, if installing the SSD and replacing the O/S with a purchased copy of Win 7 (as opposed to the crapware-loaded Dell version of Windows 7), you may just fix your problems.

Here’s a tip – right from Microsoft Tech Support – you can install a full version of Windows 7 from an upgrade disc. All you need to buy is Win 7 Home Premium Upgrade (about $90 the last time I looked). Here’s the trick. The first time the install asks for the software key, just press continue. Don’t enter the license key and Windows installs in the demo mode. When finished, run the update again, but this time enter the license key.

Another tip – On all of my PC’s there is only one user. Me. During the install when it asks for a user name, don’t enter anything – just hit “continue”. When it boots, it goes right to the desktop with no login needed.

Damn. All I’m doing is scrolling through the media bin looking at assets and NOT RESPONDING comes up after a few scrolls… has happened a number of times. I don’t know if this is related to the “Refresh” issue I’ve recently brought up (the thumbnails have to REFRESH every single time they’re brought into view! THAT can’t be right! I turned off the GPU render and turned off anti-virus. I have 24gb RAM (5000 set for Vegas). Great program when it works. Maybe I have to try another computer? Damn.

Out of curiosity – Are the Windows Explorer thumbnails and desktop icons all displaying correctly?

Interesting question, Stephen… Windows Explorer thumbnails have been IMPROVED since I added this codec several weeks ago https://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/
Now I can see thumbnails I couldn’t see before! I wonder if it’s affected the Sony Media “explorer”?? I guess I have to uninstall and find out. Argh!! (thanks)
