  • Not getting the audio in Vegas Movie Studio

Posted by Brenna Smith on September 19, 2009 at 11:48 pm

I am an extreme newbie to video editing and already need help. I tried to import and use a clip taken with my Sony Handycam that has an extension of .mpg but when I add it to the timeline it only has the video portion and not the audio. I’ve tried the same thing with some sample .wmv clips and they come up fine with both video and audio. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong and if someone could point me in the direction of some kind of “Vegas Movie Studio for Dummies” I would love it. BTW, I have Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack if that helps.

How did you import it? Try using one of the File | Import options that is appropriate for your camera. It could be that the MPG file has AC3 audio and Vegas is very picky about how that gets imported.

First I tried to import it from the camera with a usb connection but for some reason the camera was stuck on “connecting” and never connected. I got frustrated and just took the mini dvd and put that into the computer and imported it from that drive. I am very new so I’m sorry if I sound really stupid. I’m trying to help my son as he is doing a documentary for a school project and so I bought this software but I think it is a little advanced for us.

If the camera uses a mini DVD disc then you need to use File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc…

Yes, I have imported with “Import DVD Camcorder Disc” which puts the clips in “Project Media.” Then when I go to put it a clip on the timeline, only the video shows up, no audio. Just for kicks I tried it on the Windows Movie Maker and it works fine with audio and video on that. I’m really not sure what to do next. I checked online with Sony about the streaming issue with the camcorder and it says it is because I’m running on Vista. Could that be a problem for me with Vegas as well? Perhaps I need a codec (not really sure what that is but I saw someone mention it somewhere). Thanks to those reading this and trying to help me!!!!

Woo Hoo! I found an update that fixed the problem. Thank you so much for everyone’s help. What a great bunch. Now to learn how to do all this so I can help my son with his documentary!

I see that Brenna solved her problem but it does not state what she did. I have the same problem. I try to import from the DVD, but it does not state the audio import properties. it just imports the file and puts in the ASSETS. then when I drag the Asset to the timeline there is no audio.

    Do I need a CODEC….?

We are not running VISTA and we are using 9.0 Platinum

    Any help would be appreciated.

    thanks
