Not getting smooth playback ProRes HQ

16 tracks audio
3 layers of videoWorking with 5 to 10 minute projects. Timeline plays smoothly for a while, then after cutting and pasting from other timelines, or mixing formats and rendering, timeline starts dropping frames, and eventually sound disappears. If I restart FCP, stalling goes away and things play smoothly for a while.
Then it starts all over again. Have trashed preferences to no avail.
Can anyone tell me why my system is not playing smoothly. Thinking with the given horsepower I should be having zero playback issues.James Mulryan

Is all the sound 16/24 bit uncompressed or is their any mp3s, aac or 44.1khz sources in the timeline?

I had a similar problem sometime back with MultiCam footage, turned out to be some sort of a HDD based issue.
