I’m volunteer for producing small programms for our local TV channel. The most irritating thing is to keep the sound level between my own clips and also compared to clips produced by others on the same level. This should prevent that viewers need to adjust the audio level in between the various clips being broadcasted. I think that “Normalisation” of audio should do this thrick for me, but I’m confused all the time about how it works and/or how I should use it. To be more specific I’m not sure about the next few things:

    – What does normalisation exactly do for me? Is it working on a track, on a scene, on a region, or on something else?
    – What does it do? Is it adjusting the complete area (see above) to a level so the “average” is on a certain level, or does it something else?
    – Can I select the “desired average level” and what is the “world standard” level (if that exists)?
    – During interviews I’m fighting with the audio level all the time (using an envelope for that). It’s a hard battle. Can this tool help me winning the battle?
    – Is there a good document on this subject available? I think the files that come with Vegas are rather poor in this if the user is not expert in the subject already.

Thanks for the help and have a great creative (cow, calf or general) 2006!

[MdG_NL] “What does normalisation exactly do for me? Is it working on a track, on a scene, on a region, or on something else?”

It works on an event basis. It simply takes the LOUDEST point in the audio and adjusts that to the level specified. Therefore, if an event has one loud blip, THAT is what will be used as the loudest point. So if you normalize several clips, they could all still have many different sound levels.

[MdG_NL] “What does it do? Is it adjusting the complete area (see above) to a level so the “average” is on a certain level, or does it something else?”

If you use Sound Forge to normalize, it can normalize based on RMS values.

You might want to try adding a compressor effect instead. That should help even out the levels.
