Nonsquare Cropping in Final Cut Pro.
I’m working on a music video which involves many layers of the same space. There are five of the same guy [named Perry] on the same stage, shot in five separate takes and overlaid to create the illusion of “multiple Perrys.” I have run into problems overlaying some objects over each other, and a nonsquare crop function in Final Cut Pro would solve this problem. Does anyone know of a way to do this, or to “fake” this effect? Thanks for your time.
If it helps, I can post pictures of what I have and what I’m trying to do.

I have never heard of this. It sounds like you want to rotoscope. Is that what you mean?

Not precisely. All I want to do is crop in a nonsquare shape to cut around the drummer’s cymbal.
Here’s the specific situation. The guitarist’s neck overlaps the drummer’s ride cymbal in the video, and I want to crop the guitarist’s frame into a non-square shape to crop “around” the cymbal and eliminate the crossover. Pictures are enclosed.

If I could crop “around” the drummer’s cymbal it would be perfect, but I can’t. The guitar’s neck keeps passing over the cymbal, which means I can’t overlay the cymbal on top of the guitar track.
I feel like I’m not explaining this very well.

How about a Garbage Matte Filter? Do you know how to work that? I do all this kind of work now in Motion because you can draw custom masks, unlike FCP where mask drawing is very limited. Give the Garbage Matte 4 or 8 point filter a try and post back.
