Non-working program timeline
Not sure if anyone can help me with this. I installed CS4 on a HP DC7100 cmt. Duo core machine with 2 gig of ram running xp pro SP 3 32 bit. Everything works — exept timeline playback on the PC monitor. When I hit play, the timeline just sits there. It doesn’t lock up or crash. If I set it to play out to the deck via firewire it plays just fine. Here’s the kicker. I installed CS4 on an identical machine with only SP2 and less ram using the on board vga and it played perfectly. Any ideas out there?

This is almost certainly a graphics driver issue.
Update to the latest version. If you are already at the latest version then try an older one.

If the audio setup isn’t working, soundcard driver failed or the hardware was switched to playback to the camera and not desktop the playback won’t work. Look at the audio issues.

Thanks for the input. As far as graphics drivers, I’ve tried both on board and and an added card (Nvidia Quadro FX 540) Neither work. The audio may be an issue but both PCs were set up exactly with the same settings. I’ll double check the drivers to see what version I have and what is on the test machine. I’ll see what happens Monday and keep you posted.

Make sure your running the latest driver for sure, I have a couple of customers that had this same problem and updating the video card driver solved the problem. One customer was using an old video card and replacing the card solved the problem (not sure why the first card did not work). We are finding that CS4 on Vista 64bit with 8 gigs of memory or more makes a huge performance boost. After Effects can breath easier with more memory too, for about $500.00 depending on your configuration, going to 64bit + memory is not all that much of a headache and actually gives you more time at home with the family.

Thanks for all the input. I finally found the problem. It wasn’t a driver problem. It was my lack of understanding ASIO settings. I had to uncheck the audio device in the input but keep it checked in the output. If both are checked the timeline won’t play. I guess I have to do a little reading so I undertsand this a bit more. I capture everything on this sytem with firewire so the input not being checked shouldn’t be a problem (I hope).
