    Hi Everyone,

I’m working on a video that a client needs delivered for playback on the iphone. I’m working in a DVCPRO HD 1080 timeline in FCP 6.0.4. They need the video to be cropped to 480×320 (3:2 aspect ratio) because those are the native dimensions of the iphone screen. All of the iphone presets for compressor are 4:3 or 16:9. The closest preset in compressor I can find is 480×360 (1.85:1). I tried using this preset and then cropping the video in the geometry tab, but it just stretched the video after the crop to the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. I also tried opening a self contained quicktime of the video in Quicktime and doing an export for web but that just keeps it at the 16:9 aspect ratio. I’m now trying to export the video using quicktime conversion but everything I export won’t play on the iphone. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for your time and help in advance.

You might find this crazy, but the iPhone doesn’t support playback of any video formats that use the native dimensions of its screen. Make sure your client understands this, and that it’s an Apple restriction, not an inability on your part to give them what they want.

Wow. Good to know. I was starting to think the same thing but thanks for confirming it.

Iphone requires an mpeg 4 with an .m4v file extension, 480×270 or 320×180. FCP 7’s share function makes a really good Iphone file and will run in the background, but takes a while… if you choose to upgrade.
