  • No video on self-cont. QT files after deleting FCP render files??

    Dear Forum Members,

    Re-Posting with more information.

I’m new to the Forum and have read many posts, but none that seem to address an odd problem I’m having.

I’m curious to know if there could be a link between FCP, MAC settings and Quicktime that could cause my Quicktime files to open, but without video.

This afternoon I tried to view some Quicktime files on my desktop after having been away for a couple of days and suddenly none of my self contained Quicktime files have video.

Virtually no QT files have video now, even those files that I made months ago, and even those that are on DVDs or imported from other computers.

Is this the source of the problem?

The very last time I used my computer I
    deleting
1.3 gigs of FCP “undo render files” in render manager to free up space.
I did this after trying to render files and getting an FCP message
saying “no space on disk” to render files and further message saying
delete files in Render Manager to free up space.

    To complicate matters
that same afternoon, around the same time, I changed a default setting so that my
FCP generated QT files (which had been set to open in
    FCP) now opened in QT.

Thanks anyone for a suggestion of how to fix this.

    Do I need to
undelete the “undo render files” and how can I do this?

    Thanks so much,

    Lenore M.

Dear Lenore, Change your preferences back to open QT self contained movies in FCP. A self contained QT movie can only be opened in FCP. There are options in FCP to convert the movie to other codecs, but for now just open the file in FCP.

Try this out, open FCP and go to the menu at the top and choose “file”…”open” and navigate to the QT self contained file you would like to open. Let me know what happens. STU

I know alot….but not as much as the other guy.

[Stuart Christensen] “Change your preferences back to open QT self contained movies in FCP. A self contained QT movie can only be opened in FCP.”
A self-contained movie is a normal QT movie and should be opened by any QT based application.
I don’t know what Leonore had screwed. It sounds to me that she is having problems with the codec she have been using or simply QT Pro is not working.
    Leonore,
When you open a clip in QT, do you have grayed the “Export” option?

Sorry, but I have to disagree with everyone of you on this one.

    Lenore,

If you deleted render files and that made your QT file empty, that means that you saved them as reference files, not self contained files. Sorry, but there is no way to rectify that. This is precisely why I instruct all of my students to avoid exporting reference files.

    Hi David,
In the post, Leonore states “..and suddenly none of my self contained Quicktime files have video”.
If these y would be Reference movies, they would be asking for the source media, no showing a black screen with audio.
    Cheers,
    rafael
