  • No video in converted .MOV files dropped in Sony Vegas 9

I’m trying to convert video shot with my Canon SX1-IS digital camera. The full HD 1920×1080 is incredibly detalied and saturated, especially available light shooting, even better than what I get from my Canon HF11 camcorder. You’d never know it was shot with a still camera’s movie mode. But then, the SX1 isn’t your average garden-variety digicam.

The files from the camera are in .MOV format, and must be converted to .AVI to be edited or played in any manner. Playback within the camera works normally with no problems.

The problem is, after converting them, only audio appears when the files are dropped in Sony Vegas 9. Video and audio are present in any player such as Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player, so it IS really there. I have also tried converting to other formats, such as .WMV, xVID etc.

I have tried 3 different free converters (Avidemug 2.5.2, Any Video Converter and Pazera Free MOV to AVI). Same results.

I have been using Sony Vegas since version 7 for many years successfully, and Vegas 9 now for quite awhile now with no issues except for this. No problem with video from any other source. What have I missed? It looks like Vegas is at fault here, but it’s my main video editing application, I can’t afford to lose it. Reinstalling Vegas has not cleared the problem.

What makes you think that you have to convert the files to AVI format? I work with MOV files all the time in Vegas. All you need is the proper codec to decode the files. The PowerShot SX1 IS shoots H.264 which Vegas supports.

Have you dropped them on the Vegas timeline? What do you get? Are you using the 64-bit version of Vegas? If yes, have you tried the 32-bit version?

Cineform NeoScene can convert Canon 7D/5D mov files to Cineform AVI. You might want to download the trial and see if it works with SX1-IS files.
