Yes, no new versions anymore. The technical concept is outdated, he said.

[Harry Maathuis] “Sad message! I was at IBC 2015 and spoke there with Gary Rebholz about the future of Vegas Pro. VP will be maintained he said, but there will be no version 14.”

Wow. Never? That would be sad, indeed, and would mean that either I’d eventually switch to Premiere or Final Cut, or maybe they’re making Catalyst their new editing software they support.

But I am curious if he really meant never or just that it’s not coming this year. It’s too easy for something to get exaggerated down the grape vine.

I’ve been working on a project with a friend who uses Final Cut X, and it’s been interesting trying to ask him for certain edits to the sound that involve plugins that I use in seconds with Vegas. Apparently, FCPX doesn’t have a Wave Hammer plugin, or at least he wasn’t aware of one.

I would hate to switch to ransomware like Premiere just to edit on future computers or cameras I work with. But I’d like to hear something more conclusive about the future of Vegas.

It was fun and a good run while it lasted. Fortunately for me I retire in less than 2 years so the existing version will do me just fine until then.

    Well, not surprised at all…

    do you remember this thread?

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/987855#987881

    I wrote
“NOW (maybe) Edit has nothing to do with Vegas.

But all these “tools”in the catalyst suite are multiplatform.

Thus, if the final full Sony workflow will include vegas (which as of now is windows only), we should see vegas 14 for mac.
    …”

Which, as someone wrote in another thread, was an impossible task (to re-write for both mac&win)

Yeah. I still want to see confirmation one way or the other what Vegas wants to do, but if they don’t release a Vegas 14, maybe DaVinci Resolve would be a good alternative since there’s a free version, and I’m reading that it’s getting and has gotten a lot of more convenient editing features.

Just remember, Sony bought out Fast Electronics Video Machine and put it on a shelf. Oh yeah, their Espree system looked similar to Video Machine, but less capabilities and a higher price.

The key is higher price! I hope they don’t go down that road again and if they go to a subscription service they will have pissed off the wrong Irishman!

It certainly does. It’s called a “Compressor”. The name “wave hammer” is just wacky! No one in the audio or video industry would know what you are talking about. Wave Hammer a Volume Maximize and a Compressor built into one. Final Cut Pro X’s Compressor has a Gain stage (like volume maximizer) and a Limiter Threshold which is a hard limiter.

This is what it looks like in FCP X:

You can see that with this particular setting it’s set to hard limit at -10 dB and start compressing at -20 dB. The Gain stage is what Wave Hammer’s calls a “Volume Maximizer”.

Thanks for the info, John. I’ve been regularly amazed lately at how better communication or a little more knowledge on my part about equipment I don’t use would have been useful lately (this same project’s shoot was delayed for a few days because the camera operator couldn’t get the sound running on a Panasonic HPX170, but in reality that’s my responsibility as director to know how to do).

Though I think it came out better for the delay, anyways.

And if you’re curious, the project comes out tonight at 5 PM EST. It’s Angelo’s Mom: The Movie!

Sony Creative Software remains committed to Vegas Pro, our strong craft video editor, and continues to support the product. For Vegas Pro 13, we’ve released 4 updates so far, the most recent in June (build 453) which addressed some key camera support issues and is compatible with Windows 10.

As a policy, Sony Creative Software does not comment on future product plans, however we are actively assessing market and customer needs for future major and maintenance versions of Vegas Pro. If you have specific needs, we’d love to hear your detailed product suggestions:

That’s not correct. FAST Electronics was purchased by Pinnacle, which was later acquired by Avid. Sony worked with FAST on the EditStation ES-3, which was a hardware/software NLE based on the FAST 601 UI. The ES-3 offered a DV and uncompressed SD workflow; the 601 offered MPEG2 50 Mbps and uncompressed. The Video Machine was an earlier NLE from FAST, pre-dating the ES-3 and the 601. The XPRI system (not Espree) had nothing to do with FAST Electronics, but some have commented that a few of the visuals/icons in the UI looked similar.
