    Hello, all,

I am endeavoring to help set up an Avid Express HD system on a nicely-equipped Dell PC.

However the Avid isn’t talking to the nearby UVW-1800 Beta deck. Checked deck configuration and can see nothing obviously wrong. The serial cable is fine, also. (And the Avid controls a DV device just fine.)

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Tom

Are you using a Rosetta stone or data Mate serial to 422 converter? Are the lights working on it?

If so, have you gone into deck configuration and used auto-configure correctly?

Negative on Rosetta, etc. Are any external adaptors/components required for controlling a Beta SP machine from Express HD? I don’t recall needing one for Avid Express Pro. (Presently I am just connecting from the PC serial port to the deck.)

    Thanks!

All computer serial ports are RS-232. All Sony tape decks are RS-422. You need an adaptor (such as a Rosetta Stone) to translate 232 to 422 so that the machines will talk to each other.

The serial ports on the PC are RS232 protocol and the remote ports on VTRs are RS422 protocol. You can’t connect them together and expect them to work. That’s why you need a protocol converter like the Rosetta Stone to connect them.

We have ordered an RS-422 adaptor. However, just a follow-up question for safety:

Upon starting Avid Express HD, I am getting the following prompt: “Com 1 is busy and cannot be used for deck control.”

Sound like an issue the converter will solve?

    Thanks!
