  • No proper time remapping in any of Adobes products?

    Hello there,

as I’ve tried the features that allow some kind of time remapping in both Premiere Pro CS3 and After Effects CS3 I found out that there are so many downsides of each implementation that I am tempted to ask for alternative products from other companies which can maybe do what I need.

What I actually need (at best in an editing tool like PPro, not an tool like AE which is not supposed to be used for editing) is the possibility to:
    – dynamically change speed (i.e. changing the velocity curve) of a clip
    – the audio must be kept in sync
    – a setting whether the pitch of the audio should be preserved or not
    – a setting that allows a detailed configuration of the frame blending (e.g. when accelerating a clip, so you have “extra frames” to spend – motion blur is what I talk about)

I haven’t found a tool on this planet yet which is able to do that.

    Premiere Pro:
Its time remap feature only allows to create a velocity curve. Audio speed is just kept at 100% speed (and the video tutorials call it a brand new, stunning feature, I had a good laugh, this is like a comedy, like .. being ironic). No setting of how frames are blended, no adaption of the audio clip (as I just said). And actually, when importing a PPro project into AE, it doesn’t even convert the time remapped clips, they just use a speed of 100%.

    After Effects:
When using the effect “Time warp” one is able to setup a velocity curve and get a nice option that allows to setup the frame blending (the motion blur setting, when using Frame-Mix). However, it doesn’t affect audio.

The “time remapping effect” is the only effect that does affect audio, however, there is no way to affect the way frames are blended or whether to preserve the pitch of the audio.

When I tried out other products (e.g. Vegas Video) I was getting such poor results as well. Does any one of you know how to work around this, or know alternative products of which I can get a demo version to try it out? I do know that I sound harsh, which is not my intention. I am just frustrated that there doesn’t seem to be “any” program cabable of this – and as these features are not there even in 2008, I feel like being the only person on this planet that has the urge of using such features.

It sounds like you have the means to achieve one or the other. Why not combine the single results?
    1. Take the audio from time remapping in AE.
    2. Take the vision from Time Warp.
    3. Spit it out as a finished clip or Use Dynamic Link in PPro.

I know you are frustrated, but there is no magic plugin for the results you want. You will have to work with what exists and blend them. Slow-mo speed-up is an effect and not a simple thing to do.

How many editors does it take to change a light bulb?

There are a lot of third party plugins out here that do that much better (but far from perfect). The bottom line is, if you want truly good looking slow motion, shoot in slow motion.

In my experience, keeping the same pitch will sound like a rain barrel even with some of the better apps out there.

Hm, the problem here is that I actually want dynamic speeds of a clip because I want to synchronise it to background music. Usually working with AEs time remapping is OK, because it allows me to directly work with the timeline (I don’t actually work with velocity values here, I just do keyframes, drag them around, and use bezier keyframes to make the speed-transitions smoother). But the process of the “Time Warp” effect is different, as I do only work with the velocity value there, and not with the timeline directly. It would be very tedious to get the same result (the same speeds) using Time Warp and the time remapping effect.

And in the end, After Effects is not the choice of a program to synchronise clips to a movie, I think.

Can you tell me some names of these plugins? Are they purely for Aftereffects, or are there also some plugins for Premiere Pro?

The footage I use is shot in slowmotion as it is computer generated, so I can render it to image sequences having a speed that is like 10x slower than real-time, and then I speed it up to 10x speed to get it to real-time speed again. But there are just moments where I need it to be slowmo, so I set it’s speed from 10x down to 4x for example. Having so many extra frames needs these options that allow me to setup how the many additional frames (that otherwise wouldn’t be shown) are blended, for motion blur.
