So I’ve been looking for a PVM-14L5, and now it looks like they’re all gone! D*mn! I need one with the HD card installed. So what’s the next best thing that’s still CRT and doesn’t coast and arm and a leg?

been gone for a while. no clue on what to suggest at this point other than to try a used outlet like the Broadcast Store. http://www.bcs.tv

And there’s no HD card for those monitors. You just get the multiformat version and it’s HD when you feed HD material. The /1 models handle 24p natively.

I’m holding on to mine for a while yet.

Blast! Thanks for the clarification and suggestion. I did find the 20″ version on ebay, but it was starting at $7800. I’ll try that http://www.bcs.tv next.

[walter biscardi] “And there’s no HD card for those monitors.”

To clarify…you don’t need an HD card to feed this monitor an HD signal via component. I bought one with an optional HD SDI card as my capture card was HD SDI only.

I guess I got one of the last of these B&H had to sell. Lucky…

    I found this on http://www.bcs.tv:
    SONY / BVMD14H1U

It’s in the price range and looks pretty sweet. Anyone had experience with this? Or does it really matter now? Should we just pull the trigger?

Take at look at Panasonic’s BT-LH1700W or BT-LH2600W.

The JVC DTV 17″ CRT monitor is very good and a much better reference monitor than the Panasonic LCD’s in my opinion and it’s cheaper.

These are sony’s better crt monitors. Before I’d pay $7800.00 for the pvm I’d go with the BVM-D but the one you’re looking at is the 1U which has no controll pannel, you need a seperate control pannel ($1000.00) or a monitor that has one. Google BVM-D14H5U which is the same monitor WITH the control pannel on the sides. Fits perfect into a rack this way too. I have one of these and they are excellent. They take the:
BKM 142 ($4000.00) hdsdi input card or the new
BKM 143 ($1600.00) hdsdi input card.
DAC-9213-PVM (Ross) hdsdi input card $1395.00

I don’t know what the difference is between these 3 cards other than the price. Ross made an hdsdi card as a replacement for the BKM-142 a few years ago and perhaps that’s why sony has introduced this newer lower priced card. The BKM-142 takes 2 slots up, I don’t know about the other 2 cards.

Only the BVM-D or BVM-E series monitors do HD. The earlier model BVM can not display HD.
The last character in the name U = smpte phouspours or E =ebu phousphors
The 2nd last character (which is a numeral 1 = no control pannel or 5 built in control pannel.
2 different remotes (wired) are available or you can plug into any bvm with built in controls. 1 controller will run about 20 monitors but that’s a pain, I would not want one with out it’s own controller. Way too many menu options.
