No colour capturing S-Video
Posted by Stephan Laeuppi on December 12, 2008 at 2:02 pmHello everbody!
I finally mangaged to install my new AJA io. I am using it in order to digitize analog PAL video material with Final Cut Pro (5.0.1) on a G5 running on OSX .
Capturing BetaSP Material via Component (YPbPr) works fine.
Capturing VHS via Composite Video works fine.
Capturing S-VHS Video via the SVHS In connection delivers a black and whithe image only. Somehow the Chroma information does not get through. What could be the error? Many thanks for your help.

December 12, 2008 at 3:29 pmhave you checked all the “prongs” on the svideo cable (male)? Those things are very delicate, and I have bent, then broke a few in my day.
Try another svideo cable. If everything else is working, I bet its your cable.Todd Reid

It cannot be the S-Video cable, since going directly to the Sony Video monitor from the S-VHS player with the same cable I get the colour information. The chroma channel gets somehow lost, when I go into the AJA io.
I tried it using Final Cut and its settings as well as with the Control Panel – no colour on the S-Video.
Somehow strange that in the control panel I can chose in the Input Menue “S-Video” but only have the choice between Component Output options…

December 15, 2008 at 6:27 pmIf you set the AJA control panel is input passthrough, can you get a color image out of the AJA output? (bypass FCP for now).

Yes I do get a colour image on the AJA-output using composit or component signals. It is only with the S-Video signal that I lose the colour. I checked the S-Video cable (putting it directly to the monitor). The colour is there. As soon as I go into the AJA I only get a black and white image. Do you think the S-Video in socket of the AJA may be damaged?

You may need a replacement box.
You are obviously experiencing something that is not the norm.
Call them and take advantage of your warranty.Todd Reid

December 23, 2008 at 6:16 amI also get the B&W issue when I try to digitize from a DVD player through the S-Video in. Try switching to Composite and then back to S-Vid, that usually clears it up for me. Not sure why.

December 23, 2008 at 8:50 amHello Todd
Thanks for your message. In the meantime I contacted AJA and told them about the SVideo problem. The response to my email came the very same day.
Within 4 days I had a replacement box sent from California to Switzerland. I have to say I am really impressed with the Customer Support of AJA! Thumbs up!!!
