  • No browser audio issue with MXF media

I have C300MkII clips that are MXF-wrapped with embedded audio. These imported fine. When I play a clip in the browser, I can see the waveform on the filmstrip, I see the VU meters move, but I cannot hear the audio. When I cut it to the timeline, then I do hear audio just fine. This only seems to happen with the MXF clips, not other MOV clips. What am I missing?

OK, a slight solution, sort of. These are clips with multichannel audio – all mono. I cannot hear the audio when left in mono. But if I change the clip in the inspector to two stereo channels or surround, for example, then I can hear the audio from the clip in the browser.

Are you using an a/v device like AJA et al?

    If so, try this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204780

Thanks for that. Yes, We are using the BMD UltraStudio Express. And in re-checking, it is an issue with mono versus stereo configs in all files, not just MXF. Changing the MIDI settings didn’t fix it, however, I was able to hear audio when using the Apple Display speakers instead. Unfortunately for X, this isn’t not a problem in any other app. And second problem, I can’t select all clips and make a global change because audio configurations vary.

By changing the output is sys prefs?

Changing the midi should work, although this was a bigger problem on Blackmagic than AJA. AJA, for whatever reason worked all the time, the Blackmagic did not and had to change midi.

Here’s some pictures and instructions, including toggling to setting to refresh it.

Nope. Didn’t work. There’s no multichannel button any longer and it was already set to stereo.

That’s why they toggled it from surround back to stereo.

Here’s what mine looks like (OS 10.11.6).

If I click “Configure Speakers” this comes up:

Not here. Mine only shows a pulldown. The pulldown has stereo and various surround configs. I toggled to one of the surrounds and then back to stereo, but it didn’t make any difference. I’m on 10.12.4.

    Could be the difference.

I assume you have the latest drivers, or have uninstalled and reinstalled?

If the audio is working elsewhere, but not in FCPX specifically with that specific device, I would think the problem in not FCPX particularly, but how the device is interacting with it.

Everything current. This is a new 2013 MP. X is the only app that is having these issues. I’ll have to test on a different machine (older tower) and see.

Doesn’t help you any Oliver, but I remember back when Canon introduced the C series of cameras, there was many, many months between it’s MXF flavor escaping the lab – and it landing simply and contentedly in a FCP X storyline. Eventually, it did, but it wouldn’t shock me at all if something about Apple’s Roles re-do late last year caused something about how Canon MXF functions not to translate perfectly.

Unfortunately, if it turns out to be something Canon has to fix on their end in response to the new Roles architecture, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of quick revision happening around drivers at Canon – at least not that I’ve seen.

    Oh well.
