  • no audio on mpeg movie when imported into FCP

Posted by Dan Martland on August 2, 2006 at 3:12 am

Dont know if anyone else has come across this problem, But the nature of my work is to sometimes use mpeg videos downloaded of the internet. It all plays fine in quicktime player but as soon as i import in to final cut there seems to be no audio. NIGHTMARE!!
The only way i have got round this, is to record another audio track from the quicktime movie (on the desktop) and then try to sync the image and audio back up. This is very long winded and must be another way!
I owe anyone a large beer if they can help.
    Many thanks.

Final Cut doesn’t truly support mpeg. Just quicktime (.mov not .mpeg) files. Simply export from QT Pro or compressor as a quicktime that matches your sequence setttings.

I prefer Terrapin Rye Pale Ale.

You can also download a free program called MPEG Streamclip that will convert your MPEG 1 or 2 movies to a quicktime compatible format.

Some mpegs have this problem (I believe it hase to do with the tpe of mpg and how they compressed it), if you try to export it from Quicktime Pro you will probably have the same problem. I would try and use MPEG Streamclip.

I had the same problem and solved it by converting them to AVI files. It surprised me, too!

    Cheers, Graeme.
