Try outboard meters. Check out BSW, Markertek, the usual suspects…

Right now, our DVD recorder is a destination in our dub rack, and everything goes through analog Panasonic VHS machines with meters. It’s a rough guesstamate, but it’ll let you know if something is severly out of whack…

We’ve run across the same problem, but we use Pioneer’s (better without a Start up Menu) At first, they were making Prosumer/Pro decks, but slowing have done any with the high end decks.
Fortunatly, we have a real duplication center/router so all of our analogue sources run thru a router with VU meters.
The only time we don’t monitor is when were recording thru FW, which you can’t control the level anyway!
Getting a meter would be a must for good recordings to DVD. Otherwise you’ll clip audio.

    Good Luck,
