In the middle of a project, After Effects suddenly quit handling audio! Everytime I try to preview or render a comp with audio, I get this error message…

After Effects error: opening file “%s”.sound channel – can’t open Quicktime handler (-2004).

I’m using Ae on Mac OSX, and this problem started right after I started using Audacity. I tried trashing the preferences, re-installing AE, and updating to the newest version of Quicktime, but nothing has worked so far. Can anyone help me?

If I remember correctly, you have to change the system audio settings back to 48khz (or less than 68khz, if my memory is to be trusted). Go to Applications/Utilities and open the MIDI Setup app. I think. I’m at home and not near a Mac right now. In any case, the options are in the lower-right corner. Audacity probably tweaked them up to the max.
