I got a project that was shot on 4 HVX200 using firestore drives…..it is a multicam performance….I have the drive, not the firestore with all the folders in the hiearchy they are supposed to be in…..MAJOR problems….first of all, I cant even transfer the folders over to another drive without it crashing my system….fine….so then I try to use FCP import P2 function….it starts to chug for about 10 seconds, then spinning beachball….system crashes again….thought maybe its corrupt file? But ruled that out as I cant import ANY of the different cam angles without it locking my system up….really wierd thing is by accident, I starting importing(it creates new FCP media files as it unwarps the MXL files…..VERY TIMECONSUMING PROCESS) and when I have my scratch drive set to my system drive by accident (doesnt have enough space for this), it seemed to be working fine unwrapping files, but ran out of disc space….very odd….using ANY kind of external drives, to transfer to seems to totally lock up my system….

No let alone these issues that I cannot figure out and therefore cant even think about getting to work, I am shocked at how long it takes to import these files….this is the tapeless future, tell me Im doing something wrong, cause this is not worth it, not only do I have to wait an hour and a half to import each cam angel(if it worked, which it doesnt) I then would have to export each angle, then bring back in to be able to use multicam feature, cause it creates so many little clips for each cam angle…..anybody with any help on this plsssss chime in, if I am doing something wrong pls let me know,…..I really dont get this at all….

Ouch, I don;t know what to tell you about the importing problem but as far as the long import to FCP, FCP needs to convert the MXF filse to QT since it can’t edit MXF’s this is a time consuming process since it needs to make a copy of it and sticks it in the Capture scratch folder on your scratch drive.

Also in the folders is the “LASTCLIP.TXT” in each of the folders?

ya, the lastimage text file is in all of the folders….Im going nuts here, I have no idea what to do anymore…I cant get to the footage….this is the second time Ive edited stuff from the HVX200 and I really gotta say that it has been nothing but problems….and really isnt faster than using tape….unfortunatly, this performance is from a rather big pop star, and I have to go back now and say sorry…next time use a different camera, I cant ever recommend a cam like this….

    Paul…

When working with the Firestore it’s supposed to go like this:

    — Use the “Organize P2” function on the Firestore before copying from the Firestore to the hard drive system.

    — Copy the entire Firestore to the hard drive. I prefer to option-drag the Firestore’s desktop icon into a folder just to be safe.

    — Then import the P2 files into FCP.

If someone copied the Firestore over to the hard drive before using the “Organize P2” function, FCP may not be able to read the files. And if all the files weren’t faithfully copied from the Firestore to the hard drive, there may be problems. I only ran into this when I first got the Firestore and didn’t do the “Orgazine P2” operation prior to importing. But that was just a test, and I learned from the mistake.

There might be a way to recover from the problem if you hadn’t done the “orgazize P2” operation prior to moving files from the Firestore to the hard drive system. Perhaps Focus tech support can provide some answers?

I figure it’s only a matter of time before I end up in the same boat.

I would concur with Dean that the person running the FS100 didn’t do a P2 Organize before offloading the material as there really should be a problem here unless your machine is underpowered for the task. Should have at least a 1.66 GHz G4 or better, and running at least 5.04, but preferably 5.1.1 FCP. I only say this last part because of the one sympton that you reported about whne you assign the scratch disk to an external drive it crashes. There is something in the system that is problematic here.

    Good luck,

with no computer info, no OS or application versions, no explanation of your workflow plan we are all at a loss to help you.

IF the transfers are crashing your computer you with out a doubt are not set up correctly- ie, not running the current versions of the operating software or most current hardware updates.

Just because you are having a problem does not mean that the HVX does not work.- Many people, myself included, have done this very thing without issue. PrePlanning is REQUIRED when you are doing a complete revision of your existing workflow.
