    Hey all!

looks like a great source for all things Adobe let alone Premiere.

I have recently migrated from another vendor of NLE and various tools to APP2 for the purpose of integration with After Effects (which I am trying to learn at the same time 🙁 ). I am very aware of all that Creative Cow has to offer but until my recent change to Adobe products, much of the info here was irrelevant due to my “non-Adobe” setup. Now that I am here, there is much to learn as far as how to make Premiere do what I want. So here is my list of newbie questions that I could use some help with.

1 I seem to be unable to place an audio clip on whichever track on the timeline that I want. They seem to only snap to “A3”. If I want to move up to “A2” or down to “A4” for example, it will not allow me to do so. I should preface by saying that most of these audio clips have been converted in the “edit in Audition” function (a great feature, I will add), and then I split and discard video from the correlating track. The video is actually black screen with the camera lens cap on for the purpose of creating a “poor man’s V/O” clip. What could prevent me from easily just grabbing my new Audio file and moving wherever I need? That is of course provided that nothing exists on the correlating Video track already.

2 I have noticed that there is an issue with consistent placement of transitions between clips. Most of the time, I can set a crossfade transition and place it 50/50 in the center of the two adjoining clips. Several times, I was “forced” to either place a dissolve with closer to an 80/20 split or I have even seen where I was “forced” to select one clip or the other. An ideas on this as well?

3 I discovered that with the two main options to add something to the timeline, there is either the choice of “insert” which will slide everything that already exists to the right, or “overlay” which “overwrites” what is already in the timeline. Are there any other options? I must be missing something rather simple. What if you want to “add” to the timeline something new without moving any already existing media?

4 Other than the Adobe help, is there a quick source to help get a newbie to Premiere up to speed? Again, my issues aren’t with editing in general, but how to manipulate Premiere with it’s functions. An “icon” dictionary would be fantastic as I could then figure out what the GUI is trying to tell me…

    Thanks in advance, Jay

    1. Audio clips that are mono can only be placed on mono tracks, stereo on stereo tracks, etc. If you want to add audio tracks to get the right kind of track into the first track, it is easy enough to do so.

2 Yes, it happens to me sometimes as well. Click on the transition and change the setting to “center on cut” in the Effect Controls panel. It may be that you don’t have heads or tails trimmed properly, or it may just be stubborn.

3 Adding to the end of the sequence is a simple matter of moving the Current Time Indicator (CTI) to the end of the sequence before you insert or overlay. To add something to a different track, select the track before you insert or overlay.

4 There are a lot of tutorials available, but you might want to pick up a book (shop at the Dairy Store here at the COW to be a good citizen – top of this page has a link to “Store”). There are a few podcasts and tutorials here as well.

    Steven!

Thank You for your quick response.

I got the transition thing cleared up but could use a little more info on the audio issue. I also have a little more info for you on exactly what I am doing.

First: I have noticed that I only have this track problem with mono clips.

Second: I found in the prefs a setting for audio clip allocation with separate controls for the number of tracks allowed for: mono, stereo, and 5.1. The default was mono (o) which I changed to 3. I also did the same for stereo; not working in any 5.1. I closed APP and reopened but did not see any changes.

Third: I am using a combination of mono and stereo mics in the same project (wired lav is mono, shotgun is stereo).

could you elaborate a little more on your comment about “it being easy enough”? I think that was your quote…

    Thanks again, Jay

Also, is there anything that is quirky to APP that is truly unique to it and different from most other NLE’s?

If there isn’t enough of the outgoing or incoming audio clip for the standard duration clip to cover, it will change to what is possible with the meadia that is there. When marking clips for making subclips, always allow an extra second or two for this very purpose.

Your Preference setting on audio tracks will only affect new projects. You can manually add or remove tracks to your existing project by right clicking at the left end of the timeline.
