  • Newbie to FCP/AJA and have a question or two

    Hi All,

Just got a FCP system and am contemplating buying the AJA IO. Here’s my set up. I shoot using a DSR 300 currently and use a DSR 45 deck to input footage. I bought the Xserve from Apple to go with my system as well. It’s a G5 dual 2.7 system, 4.5 gig RAM, and the storage is a terabyte at present.

In the future, i.e. a year or two, I’m moving to HD (waiting to see what the HD market comes up with).

In any case, here’s what I’m looking to find out and forgive me if my questions are very basic.

Would I get a better final result using my DSR 45 (this deck does not have SDI) and going component out to the AJA into FCP using uncompressed 10 bit than going directly into FCP using firewire direct and the setting of NTSC firewire withing FCP.

I have heard that the image and graphics/text would be better using AJA IO via component versus straight firewire.

I know the IO is not going to help with HD, need a Kona for that, but would the IO make the image and such look better than the direct firewire connect? Thanks for any input.

    Hi-

The advantage to using the Io is not only the pro connectivity it offers, but also the varying codecs you can use. If you bring in your DV25 footage through Io, you can choose 8 or 10-bit uncompressed, DV50, etc. These formats are much more desirable for pro-level post, where color-correction, FX, etc. need to be applied. You will also see better results in MPEG-2 conversions for DVD authoring, etc., as it is truly “garbage-in, garbage-out”.

If you do use the DV25 codec via Firewire (or even via the Io) you can monitor and output that codec through any or all of the Io’s outputs (simultaneously), and interface to pro equipment such as decks, VTR’s, etc.

Please feel free to contact us if you wish any further information.

    Thank you,

It would be great if the IO had firewire inputs. DV decks that don’t have component or SDI could still benefit from the various capture codecs. Has AJA considered this?

I would replace both my AJA lA’s if AJA added firewire to there product.
