  • Newbie question about XDCAM

I did a little looking through the archives but did not find an answer to this question.

If you have an XDCAM disc does it require, at a minimum, the PDW-U1 to capture to Final Cut or can any Blu Ray recorder/player achieve the same thing? Isn’t it just bits on the disc in a wrapper (files on a disc)? As long as one has the XDCAM Transfer software one shouldn’t have an issue. Correct?

I have not worked with this format before and do not have any files or equipment to test any of this out. Which is why I am asking the question to find out what I would need to get.

    Sony XDCAM discs aren’t BluRay.

So yes you need an XDCAM deck, the PDW-U1 being the smallest/cheapest option.

Also I believe there’s still issues with the Sony FAM driver (included with the XDCAM transfer software) and Snow Leopard. Just another potential spanner in the works.

    Hi Trey,
As Kristin said, although the XDCAM are BR discs, you need to play them in a dedicated machine.
But if you want to work with XDCAM (discs or SxS), the first thing you need to learn, is to don’t mess the media, and use the proper workflow for Log and Capture. Once you have disturbed the file structure, the headache is granted.
    Best,
