Newbie question about the Premiere CC timeline
Dear people!
I used to cut my videos with Premiere 6 (from the 1990ies :-)). Therefrom I am used to carefreely drag and drop the clips in the timeline from one track to the other — WITHOUT any overwriting of video or audio tracks.
Now, working with Premiere CC, I find them to be overwriting the audio track instead of placing them in another track. Why the h*** does it do that??
Is there a save way to permanently deactivate this “feature”? (Which would be a lot better to me than having to press any Strg/Ctrl/Alt-Buttons always when dragging the clips around.)I uploaded a picture of what I mean. Red is what it does. Green is what it should be for me.

I don’t go back to V6, I was on Avids back then.
The issue might be the track assignment, also known as track patching. If you want put something on A2, for example, but Premiere Pro keeps forcing it to A1, you might have the track patching set for A1 only. Look at that possibililty.
The left column is the patching (if you’re using the Source monitor for editing). The right column is the timeline path.

thank you very much for your answers. I watched the tutorail video. And I think it is indeed the point for copy and pasting (via Strg+c/+v). However, it does not work for me when dragging the combined video&aufio-tracks around by grabbing it with the mouse button. The video track goes, as wished, to the upper track. But the audio track still stubbornly remains in it’s track — and reasonably overwrites the other track.
Please try to help me with that specific problem!Thank you!

If the audio ends up in the ‘wrong” track: hold down the mouse and shift and pull the audio down to the desired track.

thanks for your relply.
It truly works with pressing the shift bar — however, this means some extra effort of going down to place the audio on the other track.
Anyway, is there now setting to turn overwriting generally off??? I do not understand this feature. Who wants to overwrite other audio tracks when draging one audio/video to another track??Please help again!
Dear Jon, could you help me with the track settings and placement? I tried it and it didn’t work/change the problem. But maybe I didn’t completely understand what you meant!
