  • Newbie question about SCSI…

Posted by Tom Elgin on July 28, 2012 at 9:38 pm

I’ve just started dipping my toes into the world of SAN. I’m looking to switch gears a bit and moving from networking (think Cisco routers/switches) into the world of storage area networks.

One thing that’s not clear to me is the SCSI protocol. The only SCSI I’m familiar with are SCSI hard drives. Does the SCSI protocol have anything to do with SCSI drives? If so, in what respect?

    Thanks,

    Tom

[Tom Elgin] “Does the SCSI protocol have anything to do with SCSI drives? If so, in what respect?”

SCSI “…is a set of standards for physically connecting and transferring data between computers and peripheral devices”, mostly hard drives. So there is a direct link between SCSI as a standard, and SCSI hard drives.

SCSI in its parallel form (SCSI-1, Fast-, Wide-, Ultra-SCSI, etc.) is largely extinct, replaced by SAS (Serial Attached SCSI).

Thanks for clearing that up Alex. I never came across anything that definitively said it was both a physical spec, as well as a spec for how data was transferred.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Tom, was the Wikipedia article on SCSI confusing? It seems to say that right off the bat.

Alex, I guess I wasn’t clear. I meant that prior to that Wiki explanation, I hadn’t seen anything that clearly indicated it was both a physical spec, as well as a standard for transferring data.

    Hey Tom –
I will trade you some knowlege about SAN networks, and shared storage, if you can teach me some basics about Cisco CLI command structure, and some of the basic commands that I run into.

I assume you are familiar with the Catalyst series, like the 4948
