  • New Z7U – combine many clips into one?

I just got the new Sony HVR-Z7U – very impressive. However, I am new to the concept of acquiring footage onto anything other than a tape, so I’m a little taken aback that the CF recorder creates a new file every single time I pause. I’m used to having one huge file to work with from the trimmer as opposed to a gazillion small ones. Is there a way to get the trimmer to see all the files consecutively as one big file? Or do I have to render all the files together as another big file? I hoped that CF recording would make the process easier, but instead it appears to require this added step, which then requires double the available drive space.

Download their file importer. It’ll stitch them together if you want.
Tape will generate a new file each time you start/stop as well, unless you’ve got scene detection disabled. The only issue with the CF cards is they had to make the camera compatible with FCP, so the rest of the world is sadddled with their problems of FAT32.

Whose file importer – Sony’s? I just Googled it and can’t find such a thing. Yeah, onee “nice” thing about capturing from tapes is the ability to disable scene detection for my purposes. Hopefully this “file importer” can accomplish the same end result for the CF files.

Nothing will make the contiguous files one long file, no matter what.
the download manager merely lets you be sure you’re not renaming files. I don’t have the link handy, but googling Sony, CF, Z7 found me several results.
either way, no matter what, you’re going to have individual files. Download manager merely assures they’re in order, and that you don’t have duplicate names in the same folder.

If you are talking about M2T files from the Z7, Z1 etc there is a file connection tool, software, that you can download from Sony. I got mine from:

    https://www.sony.co.uk/biz/view/ShowContent.action?product=HVR-DR60&category=HDVVTRs&contentId=1198162909729&sectiontype=Product&preserveContext=true

Monster link but there you have it.

Forgot to mention that if they are DV AVI files from either the HVR-MRC1 or the HVR-DR60 there is another way. If you have Scenalyzer just navigate to the folder where the clips are, click, shift and select all of them then you can select ‘join’ clips from the bottom menu. 60 mins of clips take about 8 mins to combine into one. Seeing that 60 mins of clips takes about 8 mins to transfer to the PC add another 8 mins to combine it totals around 16 mins to bring an hour of material into the system. Not too bad!

Thanks for the useful info. I’ll certainly check out the earlier link you provided when it comes to the M2T files. I just figured out after my weekend shoot that my PC can render AVI files from the CF card to a single file on the PC just as fast as it can transfer them, about 18 minutes for 140 minutes of footage! So no more worries there.
