    Hi,
I will be moving out to NYC towards the end of this year and I’m wanting to get an idea of what a long format editor can expect to be paid.

I have 11 years experience – mostly in London, UK.
I use Avid and FCP – offline and online.
I specialize in offline documentary and feature film.

Could someone please tell me what I might expect to get, working on documentaries and on factual broadcast.

Also any recommendations for an editor moving out there would be much appreciated (whether to sign up to agencies, unions etc)
As would any info on the state of the industry, post the recession.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards,
    Nicholas

Nicholas, I’m sure rates very by experience, credits, project; but the documentary films I have worked on averaged around $500/day for offline. I can’t say I’ve got much advice as I’ve only been here a year and a half. Things were really, really, really slow over the winter. In the last couple of months it seems like the ice is thawing and work is proceeding. At least in my immediate experience. Can’t speak for others though. Good luck and if you ever want to meet for a coffee and chat when you get here shoot me an email or if you have any other questions. A lot of people helped me when I got here so I like to pass that help along.

    Hi Scott,
Thanks very much for your post.

Can I also ask – is it standard now to just have your reel up on your website and hand out cards, or do people still want copies on DVD.

Be great to meet up for a coffee – will drop you an email when I get out there.

    Thanks,
    N

Both actually, most I would say online. But some still want a physical copy.
