Firstly let me thank anyone who may answer my request for help I thank you sincerely!

About me, I am a photographer, visual artist residing in London who has very recently taken to film.
I have been a pc user for over 12 years and up until a few days ago thought a Mac was something one wore when it rained.
Well it’s raining now and I am glad I bought one (second hand but still newish shiny & fast (pro book).
I also bought a HDV camera (Canon XH-A1)

I have Final Cut Pro 3 installed but when I try to connect my camera to the fire wire port & then log and capture it states there that there is no communication?
So I try capture now only to get a message that states –
Capture presets must have a video or an audio digitizer set to capture please change to desired preset in the audio & video settings?

I first thought there was something wrong with the fire wire port so tested a mini dvcam but that worked fine (same connector!) so now I am thinking maybe version 3 of final cut pro just doesn

Final Cut Pro 3.0 doesn’t work with HDV. That version came out a good 6 years before HDV was introduced. You need FCP 5.1…or better yet, wait until FCP 6 comes out (end of the month) and buy that. Upgrade from 3.0 for $699.

In the meantime, after you’ve ordered your copy of Final Cut Studio 2 and are waiting for it to arrive (June?), use iMovie HD to capture and edit your HDV. Since you say it’s a newish Mac, then it should have iMovie HD as part of its standard supplied set of applications.

Once you have exhausted all the options in iMovie, you’ll be more ready for FCP. There’s a lot of stuff broadcast that was first cut with iMovie, so don’t undervalue it – it’s a great place to start. FCP is a daunting place to get into video editing, so I would recommend some of the Apple Pro Training series books which have about 20 lessons and a DVD full of material to learn from.
