I’m trying to do something similar to the lightsaber effect; I’m making something glow for a period of time.

I tried to add a new solid layer and drawing out the polygon I want. But how do I specify when the polygon appears and when it disappears? I don’t want it to be in the video the whole time.

    Thanks a lot!

And thanks to all the people behind the site!

If the layer extends the length of the timeline it will be in the whole movie. To Trim the layer, go to where you want the Polygon layer to appear (move the time indicator-thingie), then hit these keys, Alt [. Go to where you want it to end, and hit this, Alt ]. You’re all trimmed up and ready to go.
