New to the Board!
Hello all, as indicated I am new to this board and also new to the world of video editing. I am self taught and very green, so please forgive what is probably a rudimentary question. I have created an animated title block in AE and exported it as a movie file. The problem I have is that even though I created it without a background in AE, it completely blocks out the video footage when I import it and insert it on the timeline in Premiere Pro. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for your help, I would search previous posts to try to find the answer first but quite honestly, I don’t even know how I would search for something like this!

Welcome to the Pasture!
You’re making a mistake which all of us have made at one time or another – you’ve exported a movie file with no alpha channel – hence the animation over black.
You must use a codec (or stills sequence, for that matter) which supports alpha channels. I generally use Quicktime, Animation, Millions of Colors + (the plus indicating the bits set aside for the alpha channel, which cuts the hole, so to speak).
You could also use .PNG, .TGA, or .TIF formats, as sequences of stills – these support alphas as well. Welcome to rudimentary mistake number one in the world of compositing! There will be many more, but just remember to ask at the COW. We won’t beat you up for your mistakes. Good luck!
