    Hi All,

New to the offline to online process in Avid and a bit confused on the way forward.

I have an offline project with DNX36 media in it.

What are the correct steps to prepare a consolidated sequence for an online?

May I transcode the whole sequence to an online codec if the media in the sequence is a low resolution codec?

May I take a master clip ingested at a lower codec and just transcode it to a higher codec?

Should I show the reference clips in the bin and then re-import them at the higher codec?

May I link to to the original mediafiles through AMA and then transcode them to the higher codec, and afterwards relink the media files that were brought in at a lower codec to the newly transcoded high resolution media?

Do I do any of the above after a consolidation or do I have to do it before the consolidation?

    Many thanks.

Well, you have only half the information you need in order to proceed. You have the offline media, but….how was that created? In Avid? In Resolve? What steps were taken to make that offline media? The offline/online workflow requires having a plan from the start.

AMA or UME link the master footage, transcode it to offline…edit…relink in Avid to masters….transcode to high res footage…color correct…audio mix…output.

In Resolve, bring in the master footage, convert it, send AAF and media to Avid. Cut…export AAF to Resolve to relink to the masters, online, add mix…output.

So you need to start with “How was this media converted in the first place, what we the plan?”

You cannot transcode your offline media to higher resolution media. You will need access to the original camera files before you can do anything.

As Shane said…your options are then to:

1 Reimport in Avid at highrrs, if the footage was imported in Avid at low res originally. (Highly doubtful in today’s workflows…but not unheard of)

2 duplicate your sequence and try relinking it to a bin filled with camera originals. (Search for relinking sequence to all selected clips in open bins)

3 send a list to resolve, and relink there to the camera originals.

It does depend on where the originals were made to a certain degree, however if they were done correctly in Resolve in the first place, you should be able to relink them in Avid directly, if you are doing colour and online in Avid. I actually typically do the relink in Avid, even if I’m sending to resolve, so my list is already pointing to cam originals when it comes into resolve.

If the camera originals don’t exist, then you are screwed either way.
