    Hi!
I’m trying out After Effects CS4, and I’m new to it.
I have been working with text layers in a couple of very simple compositions, just a video background with some text over it.

Suddenly, when I make New>text, the cursor appears over the composition, but as I write, there is nothing to be seen. The layer does in fact surge in the layer list, down below, and the layer names takes on whatever I tried to type in. I can only click twice with the cursor on the layer to “activate” the whole line of what i’ve writen, and that is while i’m writing in the text layer for the first time. After that, I cannot seem to do so again. When I select the layer in the “layer list” the borders of the selection do not appear.

    I have verified that:

character colour is on and contrasts the background; I even have a stroke colour. The layer is the topmost.

    Thank you.

    Hi Julia,

Maybe you can give a bit more info about your composition.
Do you have a camera in your scene? or is this just a 2d Comp? Are
any of the layers 3D? Any effects applied?..ect

    Thanks

    Andy

Could you attach a screenshot of your Character panel? I suspect that something in your settings—like the font size—is set such that the text isn’t visible in the composition frame.

Case solved. It’s almost shameful: a mixture of newbieness and late nights working did it! 🙂 🙂

Basically I didn’t realize that the footage of a new text layer is not created where the timeline cursor (current-time indicator) is at present, but automatically at the beginning of the timeline. Which means, if I am “far away” from the beginning of the timeline, I don’t see the footage in the timeline panel. It doesn’t seem to be there!

    Thank you so much, anyway!

PS – is there a setting that changes this, so that the footage appears at my current time in the timeline?

from “Layers overview” in After Effects Help:

“Note: By default, new layers begin at the beginning of the composition duration. You can instead choose to have new layers begin at the current time by deselecting the Create Layers At Composition Start Time preference (Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or After Effects > Preferences > General (Mac OS)).”

I’ve got the same problem. But for me, i’l sure 90% that it’s a bugg… My color font is correct, ly font is stanfart(arial) my size is ok (i’ve tested it by graduate the scale up and down) on the font, like that for scale layer propriéty. The layer is right where the timeline is. Meanweal, i can’t see my text anymore… I’m writing, but anything… Even the size cintroler id missed. If anywone could help me, i’ve got a work to achieve soon.
    Thanks
