  • New Motion Rig- The age old questions.

    Hi gang,

Have a major project coming up in which I see myself doing a LOT of work in Motion. I’m thinking about getting a new rig, but don’t have an unlimited budget. And so the age old questions pop up: If creating a primarily FCP and Motion box, what’s the better investment? 8 Core with standard RAM and Vid cards, or a 4 core with more RAM and perhaps a better card?

Also, any weigh-ins on the NVIDIA GT 120s vs. the HD 4820s? What about two 120s vs one 4820?

Thanks as always for any and all advice and thoughts!

For Motion the graphics card is more important by far than the number of cores. The Radeon 4870 is currently the best card.

While Mark is right, do not buy a 4 core machine. Get the low-end 8-core at a minimum if you can. An 8-core is much more capable, and while you may be working in a lot Motion now, if you ever go near After Effects, the performance situation is the exact opposite…cores are more important than the video card.

Also, with apps like Compressor, and Grand Central in 10.6 you will really benefit from the time saved by the extra cores.

The 4870 is killer with FCS if you can include it as well.

    Thanks for the thoughts, guys!

Anyone try the multiple GTs option? Would Motion be able to harness the power of additional cards?

Motion is happier with one card. I agree about the 8 cores…

Totally. You may encounter issues in FCS if you try to use more than one video card. Buy the best single card you can afford. Right now that’s the Radeon 4870.
