New machine optimization
I recently switched from an older (inherited) G5 with dual core 2.0 ghz and 1 GB of ram to a new machine with 2.4 and 2 GB of ram. I just installed FCP 4.5 on my new machine and I’ve had problems with speed. Scrubbing through the time line is slow, cutting out deleting pieces of video is slow, and when the two remaining pieces slide together, it sometimes takes 4 or 5 seconds. My old machine it was virtually instantaneous. Are there settings I need to optimize to make the new machine run like the old one? Did apple send me a lemon?

2.4? is this a G5 too? If so update your OS to 10.4.10, and QT 7.2.. Or to 10.3.9 and QT 6.5.2.
If it’s an intel Mac. You need to upgrade to FCS 2… to get to a universal version of FCP. If you bought from Apple, call them, and see if they’ll sell you version 5.1… this will allow your intel mac to sing with FCP too, and it should cost less than 100 bucks…

Yes, I have Intel processors. Is all hope lost for FCP 4.5 with those chips? I’m running a powermac and also an imac, both have the same problems, and the same lag issues.

Hold on, it is FCP 5.0.4, when I inherited my old computer, it had been used by someone else for a year, is there something I can do to optimize the new one?

It still needs to be upgraded to 5.1 or higher. That’s the first Intel-compatible version.
The way you can tell for sure is to find the application itelf, select it, and hit command-i. If it says “Power PC” it needs to be upgraded. If it says “Universal” you’re ok.
(Note that this only applies to Apple’s “Pro” programs. Things like Word and Photoshop CS2 will say “Power PC” but they’ll work ok.)

No, they might work just peachy on a universal version of FCP.
