  • New MacBook with 512 of ram..but..

Trying to open Final Cut Pro 5 on my new Macbook 2gig black, but I keep getting the message that it needs 512 of ram to operate. I download the SHAKE trial…same thing…needs 512 of ram to operate.

I’ve got 512 of Ram. I’ve looked at the system info, 512. I’ve done MEMTEST, Techtool and everything says the RAM is good.

    Any thoughts?

I think FCP might need 512 Megabytes for its own – not shared with the system.

You need more RAM. The OS is taking a chunk of that RAM to run the computer so you don’t have 512 free. You should have a minimum 1GB RAM in any computer to run FCP. 2GB is better.

You have to remember that MacBooks graphic card uses shared memory, so it’s 64mb less for your system. I kept getting the same message on my PowerBook and it doesn’t mean you need another 512 just to run FCP, but you need at least that in your system.

I bought my white Macbook at the end of May, and it finally stopped working this weekend (on start up, I just get the question mark in the folder icon… have tried everything: reseting pram, taking out the battery to reset to factory settings, reparing using the install disk, etc.).

Will take it back to the store tomorrow, but have to say that I wasn’t too impressed by it’s 30 day lifespan. Have to say that I loved it when it worked, but based on my experience, I’m not sure if I can recommend it to others.

(And yeah, the mooing sucks, but I can live with it)

A folder with a question mark is a OS problem, try reinstalling the OS. The fact you can start up from the CD give more proof to this.

BTW – This would be better posted in the Apple OS forum and not within a unrelated thread.

On the new intel systems I have read the fill the RAM slots with matching size DIMMs increases the access speed and is highly recommended. So (2) 512s are better than (1) 1GB. But doesn’t make sense not to have at least 1 GB,
