Hi there, thinking about buying a new macbook pro for field editing. I’m getting different POV’s – should I go with the 17 inch for biggest screen, or 15 inch so it’s more compact. It’s really only a question of a few hundred dollars. Any input? Words of caution? Sound advice?

Most of our clients tend to prefer the 17s for field editing; the extra space makes quite a difference when editing from a laptop, and besides, you’re not really saving all that much space with a 15. If you’re typing word documents or excel spreadsheets I might say stick with the 15, but you’ll want to give yourself a little more screen real estate for editing, even out in the field.

I just read an article today saying the 15″ and 13″ models (and possibly the Air, don’t remember) had their i/o speed deliberately crippled to 1.5 GB (as opposed to the 3 GB that the hardware, and previous models were capable of). No comment from Apple on the reason. No mention that the 17″ model has that limitation, so if you’re using the sata port and attach other multiple peripherals, you probably want to go with the bigger size. Plus you get the express card slot!
