I went to the Apple store and used the new MAC Pro Nehalem 2.6ghz.
I made sure it was the base model, I clicked on “ABOUT THIS MAC”
and it displayed base model specs.

The computer seem very responsive. I think maybe because of the
faster RAM. Maybe the base model is all I need. I don’t have
a MAC yet, but I’m thinking of getting one.

I tried to export a video from IMOVIE..i think to youtube format..
and i think it’s a one to one time ratio. Meaning if the clip
was 1 minute long, it would take about a minute. I could be wrong
but I think what i was seeing. I am not an experienced mac user though. Anyone who has test results on the new mac pro base model quad, please post them up here. I can’t find any real good bench marks yet…the only ones I seen was from that macrumors site.

I bought a quad that’s supposed to come tomorrow or Monday. If you want performance results, watch http://www.barefeats.com
I would not use iMovie as a performance benchmark, though. I’m not surprised about real time rendering at all. I get faster than real time processing using our 4-core systems at work using Compressor network rendering. FWIW, you can use network rendering even if you don’t have other systems on the network. Compressor sees each core as a separate processor. So as far as Compressor will be concerned, you essentially have four computers. It should tear through compression pretty nicely. I’ll find out soon just how fast for myself. GL

The new quad is flying circles around my work Macs – gotta love that. My only minor regret is not getting more memory right away. But it’s doing great for now on only 3GB. I’m waiting to see if the 4GB sticks work anyway. If they do, I’ll wait longer for the prices to come down a bit. I can get by quite nicely on what I have for at least a good year. I am glad that I went with the display card upgrade. This is a home computer and as such I do just a little gaming as well. World of Warcraft looks gorgeous on my new LED monitor being driven by the sweet video card.

Final Cut and Motion fly. With my Macs at work, I have to render quite a bit. Not so much on my home system. I love that. I can now be more productive at home than I am at work – not that I need to be. 🙂 Compressor cranks out stuff pretty quick. At work, we have a lot more Macs to contribute cycles to Compressor; so it’s much faster at work. But for editing and effects stuff I think my home system is going to do quite well for a long time. It has more than enough horsepower, loads of expansion capability (I already installed a spare 750GB drive) and it looks damn sexy on my desk. All in all, I’m pretty happy with this purchase so far.

    That’s great!
What graphic card are you using?
Also, what mac pro do you use at work?

    Thanks
