new laptop
IT guy came to my office today and asked me to send him the system requirements for that video editing software that I use, that he may be able to get me a new laptop.
That video editing software I use is Vegas Pro 10. It was real easy to find the system requirements, but those are obviously minimums.
What should I ask for? 4GB to 8GB of RAM? 320GB or larger 7,200rpm HDD? Dual or quad core? 3GHz? What type of video card would be best for a laptop?
Obviously I want the best machine that I can get, but if I ask for the world I may end up with nothing.

I’d ask for an i5 or i7, preferably 2 7200 drives, 8 gig ram and NVidea video card. Also make sure if has a firewire port. they’re getting hard to find in a laptop now days.

Get Windows XP 64 bit and a 2nd hard drive. An eSATA port is a good alternative if you cannot get the 2nd HDD. You will need to get an eSATA caddy for the external HDD’s.
If you cannot get a laptop with built-in firewire, don’t stress. Make sure the laptop has an Express Card slot and you will be able to get a firewire card instead.
A model with a couple of USB 3 ports would be handy.
A 17″ screen would be useful for editing.

no special graphics card that i would need?

An NVidia is definitely a must over ATI. Vegas Pro 10 takes advantage of the CUDA cores when rendering.
Having said that, I have an ASUS laptop with an ATI card, but it is an i7 laptop so it has sufficient grunt to compensate 🙂

May I also ask a question here?
What(Make-models,not specially-configured)should one buy to be a) fast, and b) survive the heat of 100% CPU use for 2-3 hours, that video rendering typically requires?
(Budget limit: $1,500, preferably less.)

Please forgive my ignorance, but what does the eSata (using the caddy) offer that using a removable hardrive plugged into USB doesn’t?Thanks

Esata drives will give you a faster read/write speed than USB 2. I use USB 2 drives and don’t have problems, but if we had alot of video tracks and Vegas had to read them all from a USB 2 drive there may be a bottleneck there.
