I’m planning on ordering a new MacPro and want to know if I need to add an additional Firewire 400 card in order to use an IO LA with the new MacPro. Do I need to keep the IO LA on a separate Firewire 400 card or bus from the internal one in the Mac Pro? I assume the MacPro has more than one Firewire 400 port but aren’t they on the same bus?

I will be editing using other external Firewire 800 and 400 drives so I want to make sure I will have sufficient throughput to use the drives and the IO during editing at the same time.

Correct All of the FW ports on your mac are the same bus, even FW 400 and FW800 share that connection.

SO YES you will need to add additional FW or Sata connectivity if you are planning to use any of the Io line on your new machine.
