new footage slows down fcp
hey everyone,
i’m experiencing a problem that might have a real simple solution but i can’t seem to solve it or find anything on any other threads.
i’m switching from hdv to tapeless media/mxf (i know, it’s about time and just got a canon xf100). i’ve imported my footage but find the footage slows down fcp to the point i can’t edit (playback is fine. adjusting levels and cutting are excruciatingly delayed). i switch back to my hdv projects and i can work on them with ease. i’ve imported them in both their native xdcam format and apple prores and they both are equally slow (which leads me to a secondary question – which format should i work with, native or prores? i edit educational lectures on a green screen). am i supposed to import them some other way or do i have adjust some other setting to accommodate them?
might have given too much info or not enough – so let me know. any help and future tips will be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

First of all, I would transcode to ProRes (not necessarily ProRes HQ). The native format slows down your system a lot and is a very compressed format – specially for composite and greenscreeen work not very handy.
Slowing down your system? What is your system if I may ask.
Of course the HD Files are a lot higher resolution and therefore needing more horse power.
What system you use?
What version of FCP?
Do you transcode them with Log & Batch to ProRes?
What are the native files in? What you shot on?Sascha

hey sascha, i was playing around with it all weekend and think i solved it.
i’m using 10.6.6 + fcp 7.03. i used batch and transfer to Apple ProRes 422. the native files are canon xf and i was shooting in 60i but switched to 30p.
are there any other hints/tips? thanks!

Glad to hear! So, what was the issue?
Tips? Well, depending on your computer system and its strength.
In General: If your camera can, try already to shoot natively in progressive frame rate.
If you have to convert it later – maybe use AE or Cinema Tools – I am not so sure, if FCP does such a great job in converting frame rates. If you can spend a little extra bugs: Magic Bullet is a great tool to convert Interlaced to Progressive – very good results.
If you work on a Laptop, make sure you have your actual footage you work with on an external drive, best connected with FW800 – it’s better connection to stream HD.
If you work with a lot of Effects and Transitions and your system is not very beefy in processor power, convert maybe first to ProRes Proxy Files – they are less heavy and more workable and once you are done editing Batch & Capture the result in HiResolution again.Greetz,

i think the problem was i was shooting in 60i so when i brought the footage in, fcp had problems working with it. i switched it to 30p and found i was able to edit with ease.
